When to go to Matsuyama

Seasons, a month-by-month table, local festivals and when Matsuyama is busiest.

Matsuyama has one of the mildest, sunniest climates in Japan thanks to the sheltered Seto Inland Sea. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots; summer is hot and sticky; winter is cool, dry and quiet — and the best time for hot springs and fresh mikan.

Spring

Late March to early April brings around 200 cherry trees into bloom on the castle hill, followed by fresh green and comfortable walking weather through May.

Summer

The rainy season runs from about early June to mid-July, then comes real heat — 32°C and humid. Start early, use the ropeway and plan indoor stops.

Autumn

October and November are clear and mild, with festivals in early October and autumn colour in the castle grounds from mid-November.

Winter

Cold but rarely freezing, with little rain and almost no snow. Sights are quiet, hotel rates are low outside New Year, and the baths feel best.

Crowds & booking ahead

Matsuyama never feels overrun, but the castle is busy in cherry-blossom week and Golden Week (29 April–5 May), and hotels fill for the mid-August Obon holiday and New Year. Cruise-ship days bring a midday rush to the ropeway — go first thing or after 15:00.
