When to go to Ehime

Spring and autumn are the obvious answers. But this is one of Japan’s mildest corners, and there is a good reason to come in every month of the year.

The short answer

Come from late March to May or from October to November for the most comfortable weather, the clearest skies and the main seasonal sights. Winter is mild, dry and peaceful — perfect for Dogo Onsen and city sightseeing. Summer is hot and humid on the coast but brings festivals, river evenings and the mountain season. The only weeks to think twice about are the rainy season from early June to mid-July and the peak of the typhoon season in September.

The table uses long-term averages for Matsuyama. The highlands are 4–6°C cooler, the south a little warmer and wetter.

Spring (March – May)

Cherry blossom opens in Matsuyama around the last week of March and peaks in early April — the castle hill, Dogo Park and the riverbanks at Ozu are the best-known spots, with the mountains following two or three weeks later. April and May are the prime months for the Shimanami Kaido: mild, clear and scented with citrus blossom. Wisteria blooms at Uwajima’s Tensha-en in mid-April and azaleas in Niihama in May.

The catch is Golden Week (29 April to about 5 May), when the whole country travels: prices jump and trains, ferries and rental bikes sell out. Either book months ahead or come just after it.

Summer (June – August)

June and the first half of July are the rainy season (tsuyu): not constant rain, but high humidity and periodic downpours that can disrupt mountain roads and railways. From mid-July the weather turns hot and sunny, with highs of 31–33°C and warm nights.

Summer has its rewards. Mount Ishizuchi holds its opening festival in early July; Ozu’s cormorant fishing runs from June to September; Uwajima, Matsuyama and Imabari stage their big festivals in late July and August; and the highlands stay comfortably cool. Obon, around 13–16 August, is another national holiday peak.

Autumn (September – November)

September is still summer-warm and is the month most likely to see a typhoon. From October the air dries out and Ehime is at its best. Mid-October brings the two greatest festivals in the prefecture within days of each other: the lantern-lit floats of Saijo and the giant drum floats of Niihama.

Autumn colour starts on the summit of Ishizuchi at the end of September — among the earliest in western Japan — and works its way down: the Shikoku Karst and Tsuchigoya in mid-October, Omogo Gorge from late October, and castle parks and temple gardens on the coast in the second half of November. November also opens the citrus season.

Winter (December – February)

Sheltered by mountains on both sides, the Inland Sea coast has dry, often sunny winters, with daytime temperatures around 10°C and very little snow in Matsuyama. It is the classic season for hot springs, for winter fish at its best, and for mikan at their sweetest. Sights are uncrowded and hotel rates are low except from about 29 December to 3 January.

In the mountains it is a different story: Ishizuchi and Kuma Kogen have real snow, the Ishizuchi Skyline and the Shikoku Karst road are closed, and Tonaru in Niihama shuts until March. Winter is also when the river fog of the Hijikawa Arashi rolls through Ozu.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Ehime?

April, May, October and November are the most comfortable. May and late October to early November have the most reliable weather with fewer crowds than cherry-blossom week or Golden Week.

When is cherry blossom season in Ehime?

In Matsuyama it usually runs from the last week of March to the first week of April, a little later inland and in the mountains.

Does it snow in Ehime?

Rarely on the coast. Matsuyama sees a dusting once or twice in most winters. The mountains — Ishizuchi and Kuma Kogen — have regular snow from December to March.

When is typhoon season?

Typhoons can affect Shikoku from July to October, most often in August and September. They usually pass within a day or two but can stop trains and ferries; build some slack into travel plans.

April to May and October to November. See the Shimanami season guide.
