When to go to Shimanami Kaido & Imabari

Seasons, a month-by-month table, local festivals and when Shimanami Kaido & Imabari is busiest.

The Seto Inland Sea is one of the driest, calmest parts of Japan, so the Shimanami Kaido is rideable all year. For comfort, aim for spring or autumn; summer is beautiful but very hot on the exposed bridges, and winter days are short and windy.

Spring

March to May is ideal: mild, clear, with cherry blossom in early April and citrus blossom scenting the islands in May. Golden Week is very busy.

Summer

June is the rainy season. July and August are hot, humid and bright — ride from dawn, rest at midday and swim at the island beaches.

Autumn

Late September to November has the most reliable weather, warm seas, low humidity and ripening mikan on the hillsides. The best season overall.

Winter

Cold winds and early sunsets (around 17:00), but dry and uncrowded, with citrus at its peak. Dress in layers and plan shorter days.
