Ehime itineraries

Three routes that work by train, tram and bicycle, each built outwards from Matsuyama.

These plans assume you arrive in Matsuyama by air, by train from Okayama or by ferry from Hiroshima, and that you would rather stay two or three nights in one place than repack every morning. All three can be done without a car. If you are carrying a Japan Rail Pass or an All Shikoku Rail Pass, every train mentioned is covered.

2 days

2 days: Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen

The essential Ehime weekend: an original castle, a legendary bathhouse and the food of the Inland Sea.

MatsuyamaDogo Onsen

  1. Day 1 — Castle town

Take the chairlift up to Matsuyama Castle and spend the morning among its gates and turrets. Walk down to the Ninomaru garden, lunch on tai-meshi near Okaido, then visit Bansuiso and browse the arcades. Late afternoon, ride the tram to Dogo Onsen and check in to a ryokan.

Evening: a first bath at the Honkan or Asuka-no-Yu, dinner, and a stroll through the lantern-lit streets.

  2. Day 2 — Hot springs & haiku

An early soak, then walk to Ishite-ji, Temple 51 of the pilgrimage. Return via Isaniwa Shrine and the Shiki Memorial Museum. After lunch, choose between a guided Dogo culture walk, a sake brewery tasting or a half-day in the pottery town of Tobe.

Tip: Coming from Hiroshima, take the morning Super Jet and you can start Day 1 before lunch; return on an evening ferry on Day 2.
4 days

4 days: add Uchiko, Ozu & the Shimanami Kaido

Old merchant towns to the south, island cycling to the north, with Matsuyama as your base throughout.

MatsuyamaDogo OnsenUchikoOzuShimonada & the Iyo-nada CoastShimanami Kaido & Imabari

  1. Days 1–2 — Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen

Follow the two-day plan above, but keep your hotel for all four nights.

  2. Day 3 — Uchiko, Ozu & a seaside sunset

Morning limited express to Uchiko (25 minutes) for the Yokaichi old town and the Kamihaga Residence. After a soba lunch, continue ten minutes down the line to Ozu for Garyu Sanso and the castle. Return by the coastal local train and step off at Shimonada for sunset — check the timetable carefully — or simply take the express back.

  3. Day 4 — Shimanami Kaido taster

Limited express to Imabari (35–40 minutes). Rent a bike, cross the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge to Oshima and climb to Kirosan Observatory if your legs allow. Back in Imabari, see the sea-moated castle and eat griddle-seared yakitori before the train home — or keep riding and finish in Onomichi with your luggage sent ahead.

Tip: Swap Days 3 and 4 according to the forecast: the bridges want a clear, calm day; the old towns are fine in drizzle.
6 days

6 days: the grand loop — south coast, islands & the mountain

From the bull-sumo port of Uwajima to the summit of western Japan, with two nights away from the city.

  1. Days 1–2 — Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen

As in the two-day plan. Add the Botchan train and an evening food experience if time allows.

  2. Day 3 — Uchiko & Ozu to Uwajima

Travel south with stops in Uchiko and Ozu, then continue by limited express to Uwajima (about 45 minutes from Ozu). Dinner is Uwajima-style tai-meshi and jakoten. Overnight in Uwajima.

  3. Day 4 — Uwajima, then back north

Climb to the original castle keep, visit Tensha-en garden and the harbour market. With a rental car or the private excursion, add the terraced fields of Yusu Mizugaura. Afternoon express back to Matsuyama (1 hour 20 minutes).

  4. Day 5 — Shimanami Kaido

A full day on the bike from Imabari, as far as Omishima and Oyamazumi Shrine if you are fit, returning by bus — or the shorter Oshima loop. Sleep in Imabari or continue by train to Saijo (30 minutes) ready for the mountain.

  5. Day 6 — Mount Ishizuchi or Niihama

Hikers: first bus from Iyo-Saijo to the ropeway and up Mount Ishizuchi, back by mid-afternoon. Non-hikers: Saijo’s spring-water walk and the copper-mine ruins of Niihama. Either way you finish on the main line, an hour from Matsuyama and under two from Okayama.

Tip: Mount Ishizuchi is a late-April-to-early-November hike. Outside that season, spend Day 6 in Niihama and Saijo, or add Tobe and a second evening at Dogo.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best base for exploring Ehime?

Matsuyama (or Dogo Onsen, ten minutes away). Limited expresses fan out from it to Imabari, Saijo and Niihama in one direction and Uchiko, Ozu and Uwajima in the other.

Can I combine Ehime with Hiroshima?

Very easily. The ferry between Hiroshima and Matsuyama takes 70 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, and the Shimanami Kaido is itself a route between the two prefectures.

Do these itineraries work with a rail pass?

Yes. All the JR trains are covered by the Japan Rail Pass and the All Shikoku Rail Pass; the latter also covers Iyotetsu trams and trains under its current rules.

Should I rent a car?

Not for these routes. Add a rental car for a day if you want the highlands — Omogo Gorge and the Shikoku Karst — or the coast around Uwajima.
