Getting to Matsuyama
Every practical way to reach Matsuyama from Matsuyama and the main gateways, with times, rough costs and how to get around once you arrive.
Matsuyama is the transport hub of Ehime. You can fly straight in, come by limited express from Okayama on the Shinkansen line, or cross the Inland Sea by ferry from Hiroshima — the last being the most scenic way to arrive. The region-wide transport guide covers passes and long-distance options in more detail.

By air
Matsuyama Airport (MYJ) sits on the coast about 6 km west of the centre. Domestic flights link it with cities such as Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Osaka (Itami), Nagoya, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Okinawa, and in recent years there have been direct international services from Taipei, Seoul and Busan — routes and frequencies change, so confirm what is flying when you book.
Limousine buses meet arrivals and run to JR Matsuyama Station (about 15 minutes), Matsuyama City Station, Okaido and Dogo Onsen (about 40 minutes) for roughly ¥700–1,000. A taxi to the centre costs somewhere around ¥2,500–3,000; a pre-booked private transfer is an option for groups.
By train
There is no Shinkansen on Shikoku. From Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Hiroshima, ride the Sanyo Shinkansen to Okayama and change to the Shiokaze limited express, which crosses the Great Seto Bridge and follows the Inland Sea coast through Imabari to Matsuyama in about 2 hours 40 minutes. From Takamatsu the Ishizuchi limited express takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Both are covered by the Japan Rail Pass and the All Shikoku Rail Pass.
JR Matsuyama Station is on the western edge of the centre; trams and buses outside take ten minutes to Okaido and twenty-five to Dogo Onsen.
By ferry
From Hiroshima, Setonaikai Kisen and Ishizaki Kisen run both a fast Super Jet (70–80 minutes, roughly ¥8,000) and a slower car ferry (about 2 hours 40 minutes, roughly ¥5,000) to Matsuyama Kanko Port, most calling at Kure. From the port a connecting bus runs to Takahama Station for the Iyotetsu train into town, and limousine buses run direct to the centre and Dogo.
From Kyushu, ferries from Beppu and Usuki land at Yawatahama, an hour south by train. From the Osaka side, the overnight Orange Ferry sails to Toyo port near Saijo, with a connecting bus.
Getting around Matsuyama
The orange Iyotetsu trams are all you need for sightseeing: five city lines circle the castle and run out to Dogo Onsen, with a flat fare paid on leaving the car (cash or IC card — nationwide transit cards have been introduced on the trams in recent years, but carry coins just in case). One-day and multi-day tram and bus passes are sold in the Iyotetsu app and at ticket offices. Iyotetsu’s suburban trains reach Takahama (for the port) and Yokogawara, buses serve Tobe and the airport, and the centre is flat enough to explore on a rental bicycle.
