Private tour From about €158 Matsuyama customised private tour with a licensed guide
A government-licensed guide builds a half-day around your interests — the castle, Dogo Onsen, Ishite-ji or the arcades — travelling on foot and by tram.

An hour inland from Matsuyama the road climbs over a pass into another climate: a forested plateau of cedar, clear rivers and villages where summer nights are cool and winter brings real snow.
Kuma Kogen — “Kuma highland” — is the largest town by area in Ehime and one of the emptiest, a sweep of mountains on the old highway to Kochi. Three things bring travellers here. Omogo Gorge, cut into pale rock at the southern foot of Mount Ishizuchi, has water of an almost unreal blue-green and is one of Shikoku’s finest places for autumn colour. Two temples of the 88-temple pilgrimage stand in the forest nearby, one of them wedged into a towering cliff. And along the southern skyline runs the Shikoku Karst, a high limestone plateau of white outcrops and grazing cattle.
None of it is difficult, but all of it is spread out, and buses are scarce. This is the part of Ehime where hiring a car changes everything.
