Kuma Kogen & Omogo Gorge travel guide

Where to base yourself, what to eat, how to save money and ready-made day plans for Kuma Kogen & Omogo Gorge.

Planning your day

Do not try to see everything in one day. Choose either the temple-and-gorge day (Daiho-ji, Iwaya-ji, Furuiwaya and Omogo, about 8 hours from Matsuyama) or the karst day (straight to the Shikoku Karst, with a stop in Kuma Kogen town). With two days, stay in the highlands or loop on into Kochi Prefecture.

Food

The highlands are known for tomatoes, sweetcorn, river fish such as salt-grilled amago trout, buckwheat noodles and rice grown in cold clear water. Eating places are few and close early; the roadside station in town and a couple of rest houses at Omogo and on the karst are the reliable options, so carry snacks.

Practical tips

Temperatures are 4–6°C lower than in Matsuyama and the weather changes quickly, so bring a layer in any season. Mobile coverage drops out in the gorges. In winter the main road to Kuma Kogen is kept open but can be icy, and snow tyres are needed; the karst and Skyline are shut. There is a small ski area near the town.

Where to stay in Kuma Kogen & Omogo Gorge

Accommodation in the highlands is limited to a few lodges, farm stays, a temple lodging and cabins on the karst, few of which appear on international booking sites. Most visitors come for the day from Matsuyama or Dogo Onsen.
