Things to see in Tobe

The sights worth your time in Tobe, with how long each takes and what to check before you go.

Tobe has two clusters about four kilometres apart: the pottery district around the Traditional Industry Hall at the southern end of the bus line, and the zoo and parks on the hill to the north. A car or taxi links them most easily.

Tobe-yaki kilns & the pottery path — Tobe

Tobe-yaki kilns & the pottery path

The lanes of the Gohonmatsu and Ominami districts are dotted with kilns, each with a showroom in the front room or a converted storehouse. A signposted walking course links them, including a 500-metre footpath whose walls and paving are inlaid with hundreds of ceramic tiles made by local potters, climbing to a hilltop park with a view over the valley and an old climbing kiln. Pick up a kiln map and wander; nobody minds if you only look.

Practical: Showrooms generally 9:00–17:00, with irregular closing days. Free. Allow 1–2 hours on foot from the Traditional Industry Hall.

Tobe-yaki Traditional Industry Hall

The best first stop. Downstairs is a large shop with work from most of the town’s kilns at kiln prices, so you can compare styles before seeking out a maker; upstairs, a museum traces Tobe ware from its eighteenth-century beginnings — when the domain set out to turn whetstone-quarry waste into porcelain — to contemporary studio work.

Practical: About 9:00–17:00, usually closed Mondays; around ¥300 for the museum, shop free. At the “Tobeyaki Dento Sangyo Kaikan-mae” bus stop.

Pottery workshops — Tobe

Several large studios and the town’s own ceramic centre let visitors decorate a blank cup, bowl or plate with the traditional indigo pigment, or try throwing on a wheel under instruction. The piece is then glazed, fired and sent on. Painting takes under an hour and needs no skill — the pigment looks grey when applied and fires to deep blue.

Practical: Typically 9:00–15:00 or 16:00 for last entry. Reserve for groups or wheel sessions. Domestic delivery in about a month; check on international postage.

Tobe Zoo — Tobe
04

Tobe Zoo

Ehime’s prefectural zoo spreads over a wooded hillside, with large, moat-style enclosures arranged by continent and a relaxed, uncrowded feel. It is known throughout Japan for Peace, a polar bear hand-reared by her keeper after her birth in 1999, and keeps elephants, big cats, great apes and a walk-through for smaller animals — around 150 species in all.

Practical: About 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), usually closed Mondays; around ¥600 for adults. The site is hilly — allow 2–3 hours. Bus stop “Tobe Dobutsuen-mae”.

05

Ehime Children’s Castle

Next to the zoo, a big prefectural park for children with playgrounds, go-karts, a boating lake, craft rooms and a small monorail-style ride, linked to the zoo by a footpath. On a fine weekend it is where half of Matsuyama’s under-tens seem to be.

Practical: Usually 9:00–17:00, closed Wednesdays; entry to the park is free, with small charges for rides. Shares car parks with the zoo.

Opening hours, closing days and admission fees change — especially around New Year, festivals and renovation works. Treat the details here as a guide and confirm on the official site before you set out.
