The spring pottery fair in mid-April is the town’s biggest weekend. Mild weather for the zoo and blossom in the hillside parks.
Summer
Hot and humid; go to the zoo at opening time and spend the afternoon in air-conditioned showrooms.
Autumn
The autumn pottery fair in early November, persimmons ripening in the orchards and ideal walking weather on the pottery path.
Winter
Cool, dry and quiet. Good for unhurried browsing; some animals are less active, others — the polar bear — more so.

Crowds & booking ahead
The two fair weekends draw big crowds and traffic jams on Route 33 — go early or take the bus. The zoo is busy on fine Sundays, in Golden Week and during school holidays; weekday visits are peaceful.
