When to go to Shimonada & the Iyo-nada Coast

Seasons, a month-by-month table, local festivals and when Shimonada & the Iyo-nada Coast is busiest.

Shimonada is about light and weather rather than season. Any clear evening works; what changes through the year is the time of sunset, the temperature on the platform and how many other people are there.

Spring

Mild evenings, sunsets from about 18:15 to 19:10, and rapeseed and cherry blossom along the line in late March and April.

Summer

Late sunsets (after 19:00), warm air and more haze. The rainy season in June and early July brings many grey evenings; August is busy with holidaymakers.

Autumn

Often the best balance: clearer air, comfortable temperatures and sunsets moving from about 18:30 in September to 17:00 in November.

Winter

The sharpest, most colourful skies and the fewest visitors, but a cold wind off the sea. Sunset is around 17:00 — easy to combine with dinner back in Matsuyama.

Crowds & booking ahead

On fine weekend evenings and in holiday weeks there may be several dozen people on the little platform at sunset, and the car park overflows. For solitude, come on a weekday, in winter, or in the morning, when the sea is blue and the station is empty.
