Shimonada & the Iyo-nada Coast travel guide
Where to base yourself, what to eat, how to save money and ready-made day plans for Shimonada & the Iyo-nada Coast.
Planning around the sunset
Sunset at Shimonada ranges from about 17:00 in December to about 19:25 in late June. Look up the exact time for your date, then pick a train that arrives 45–60 minutes earlier: the light is best in the half hour before the sun touches the horizon, and the afterglow lasts another 20 minutes. Clear winter evenings give the sharpest colours; summer haze softens them but the evenings are warm.
Visitor etiquette
Shimonada is a working station in a small community that has had to cope with sudden fame. Keep off the tracks, do not block the platform when trains arrive, keep noise down in the evening, take rubbish with you and do not park on verges or in residents’ spaces. Tripods are fine if they are out of the way; drones are not appropriate.
Food & facilities
Bring a drink and a snack. Apart from the weekend coffee stand there is very little at the station; the nearest reliable food is at Futami Seaside Park (seafood snacks, soft-serve) or back in Iyo City. There are toilets at the station but no shop, no lockers and no staff.
Where to stay in Shimonada & the Iyo-nada Coast
There is nowhere to stay at the station itself and only a handful of small guesthouses along this stretch of coast. Nearly everyone visits from Matsuyama, or stops on the way to or from Ozu — both are well supplied with hotels.
Trip.com lists few or no properties in this destination itself, so the hotels below are in the nearest practical base.
- ANA Crowne Plaza Matsuyama — Matsuyama’s best-known full-service hotel, on the main avenue below the castle with the tram stop outside and Okaido a short walk away.
- Candeo Hotels Matsuyama Okaido — A modern hotel at the top of the Okaido arcade, steps from the castle ropeway, with a rooftop spa for guests.
- NIPPONIA HOTEL Ozu Castle Town — Ozu’s dispersed heritage hotel: guest rooms in restored merchant houses and storehouses scattered through the old town.

Shimonada & the Iyo-nada Coast: frequently asked questions
Is Shimonada Station worth the trip?
If you enjoy quiet, scenic places and can time it for sunset in decent weather, yes. If you expect an attraction with things to do, you will be done in fifteen minutes.
How often do trains stop at Shimonada?
Roughly every one to two hours, with longer gaps at some times of day. Always check the current JR Shikoku timetable for both directions.
Can I use a Japan Rail Pass?
Yes for the ordinary local trains. The Iyonada Monogatari is an all-Green-Car reserved train with its own rules, so confirm what your pass covers before boarding.
Was Shimonada in Spirited Away?
No. It is sometimes compared to the sea railway in that film, and it has appeared in other Japanese films, dramas and adverts, but it was not a model for it.
