Getting to Niihama

Every practical way to reach Niihama from Matsuyama and the main gateways, with times, rough costs and how to get around once you arrive.

Niihama is on the JR main line in eastern Ehime, between Saijo and the Kagawa border. The mine sites are best reached by car, though buses serve the valley as far as Minetopia.

By train and bus

Limited expresses stop at Niihama about once an hour from both Matsuyama and Okayama. From the station, local buses towards Minetopia Besshi are sparse, so check return times before you set off or budget for a taxi one way. The Memorial Museum is on the same road.

By car

From the Matsuyama Expressway, Niihama IC is ten minutes from Minetopia’s lower site. The road beyond to Tonaru climbs through forest for about 25 minutes; the final section is very narrow, with blind bends, and large vehicles are prohibited. Rental cars are available at Niihama Station.

Getting around Niihama

The city is spread out and not designed for walking between sights. With a car you can see Minetopia, Tonaru and the Memorial Museum in a long half-day. Without one, combine bus or taxi to Minetopia with the Tonaru bus tour, then return to the station for the copper-clad arts centre next door.
