When to go to Mount Ishizuchi & Saijo
Seasons, a month-by-month table, local festivals and when Mount Ishizuchi & Saijo is busiest.
The hiking season runs from late April to early November. Conditions on the summit are those of a 2,000-metre mountain — cooler, windier and wetter than the coast, which is what the table below describes.
Spring
Snow lingers on the upper trail into April. May brings fresh green and azaleas, and is one of the best months to climb.
Summer
The opening festival in early July draws thousands of white-clad pilgrims. July and August are warm with afternoon cloud and thunderstorms — start at dawn.
Autumn
Colours begin on the summit in late September, reach Joju in mid-October and the valleys in November. Stable weather, cold mornings; the Saijo Festival falls mid-month.
Winter
Deep winter on the mountain: rime ice, snow and short days. Saijo itself is mild and dry, and the springs never freeze.
