By train
The Uwakai limited express runs from Matsuyama through Uchiko and Ozu to Uwajima about once an hour, taking roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. The last half hour, descending to the coast past citrus terraces, is the scenic part. A day trip from Matsuyama is possible, but an overnight stay is more relaxed.
From Kochi and the Shimanto River
The single-track Yodo Line links Uwajima with Kubokawa in Kochi Prefecture, following the upper Shimanto River. JR Shikoku runs it with a set of novelty trains — an open-sided trolley car in season and railcars themed on models and bullet trains. Services are infrequent, so plan around the timetable. It is the natural way to continue a loop of Shikoku.
Getting around Uwajima
The centre is compact: station, arcade, castle and harbour are all within 15 minutes’ walk, and bicycles can be rented from the tourist information office at the station. Local buses run to Tensha-en and south along the coast; for the terraced fields, Nametoko Gorge and the pearl coast, rent a car at the station or take a taxi or tour.
