Uchiko travel guide

Where to base yourself, what to eat, how to save money and ready-made day plans for Uchiko.

Day trip or overnight?

Three to four hours is enough for the sights, which makes Uchiko a classic half-day from Matsuyama, usually paired with Ozu in the afternoon. Staying the night is a different experience: the day-trippers leave by late afternoon and the street is yours. Dinner options are limited in the evening, so reserve a meal at your inn or eat early.

What to eat & buy

Handmade soba served in an old merchant house is the classic Uchiko lunch. The farmers’ market by the river sells local fruit, sausages, bread and gelato made by the growers themselves. Good souvenirs are hand-dipped candles, washi paper from Ikazaki, bamboo ware and jars of seasonal jam.

Saving money & practical tips

A combined ticket for Uchiko-za, the Museum of Commerce and Domestic Life and the Kamihaga Residence is cheaper than paying separately. Most museums close around 16:30 and some shops shut one or two days midweek, so arrive in the morning. There are coin lockers at the station and tourist information near Uchiko-za.

Where to stay in Uchiko

Uchiko has a small number of characterful places to sleep — restored townhouses and storehouses rented as inns, mostly with just one to three rooms. They book up fast; otherwise visit on a day trip from Matsuyama or stay in nearby Ozu.

  • Uchiko-no-Yado Ori — A restored townhouse inn in Uchiko’s old quarter, with just a few rooms and a great deal of character.
  • Uchiko Inn Kura — A converted storehouse rented as a private stay in the heart of the preservation district.
  • Uchiko Inn Cocoro — A small guesthouse within walking distance of the old town and Uchiko-za theatre.

Uchiko: frequently asked questions

Is Uchiko worth visiting?

If you like well-preserved old towns without the crowds of Kyoto or Takayama, very much so. It is small, authentic and easy to reach.

Is the Uchiko-za theatre open?

It normally opens daily for visits except during performances, but conservation work scheduled for the mid-2020s may close the interior for an extended period. Confirm with the town’s tourism website before you travel.

Can I see Uchiko and Ozu in one day?

Yes — they are 10–15 minutes apart by train and both compact. Start early and give each about three hours.
