When to go to Dogo Onsen
Seasons, a month-by-month table, local festivals and when Dogo Onsen is busiest.
Hot springs are a year-round pleasure, but Dogo is at its best in the cooler months, when steam rises off the water and a yukata stroll is bracing rather than sweaty. Spring adds blossom in Dogo Park; early October brings the district’s most dramatic festival.
Spring
A festival for the spring itself in mid-March, then cherry blossom in Dogo Park from late March. Pleasant evenings for strolling; busy at weekends.
Summer
Hot and humid — bathe early or late. Open-air baths and a cold beer afterwards help, and summer festival evenings are lively.
Autumn
Comfortable from October, with the dawn portable-shrine clash on 7 October and clear, mild days into November.
Winter
Peak onsen season: chilly air, hot water and fresh citrus. Quiet midweek; very busy over New Year.
